Pardeep Kaur Dhaliwal

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune disease which leads to several dermatologic and patho-physiological changes in the human body. Myositis onset is associated with production of autoantibodies. Several factors were found to be responsible in complicating the event. Myositis specific autoantibodies, inflammatory cytokines and innate immunological cells were found to play a predominant role in causing the disease. Till now, no FDA approved drug has been introduced into the market to treat DM. Use of corticosteroids and immunosuppressant are the only alternatives to tackle the problem, but the safety aspect of these drugs is a matter of concern because their prolonged exposure may induce health hazards. The present review article is an attempt to briefly describe DM, factors responsible for causing it and the treatment strategies which can be adopted to overcome it. The present article highlights the need of combinational therapy comprising of combination of cyclosporin A along with methotrexate to overcome the complications in DM patients in the present review article.
